5.5m racing in Germany started with Olympic participation in 1952 and continued through to 1968. Names connected to the Olympic events have been Lubinus (1952 & 1956), Scholl (1960), Reich (1964) and Harmstorf (1968).

Several other sailors contributed with the ordering of boats to the further development of the construction class. Boatyards involved so far have been A&R, Burmester, de Dood, Lehmann and Martin. Important Designers up to now have been Rasmussen, Lehmann and Brandt.

As in many other countries, the 1970s saw former 5.5m sailors move to the Soling and the Admiral's Cup. At the end of the 1990s, Class development took up again, several boats were reactivated, more Modern boats came to the fleet. Today the GER boats are an important part of the International racing activities and a good number of regattas is being held on National level as well. Some of the sailors reaching medal ranks have been Schümann, Müller and Schön.

With over 80 boats in the country today, we cannot list them all here, an overview of all boats over the years will do.
