5.5 World Championship 2011 | Updates

HELSINKI - Winners comments
Representing best the 90 sailors present in Helsinki this year, the helmsman of 5.5 FIN 50, Kenneth Thelen, winner of the Gold Cup and the World Championship and of 5.5 GER 30, Andreas Christiansen, winner of the Evolution category in the Worlds, have this to say:
Kenneth:
Taking the Boy (Scandinavian Gold Cup) back to Finland after 16 years and back to the NJK club after 25 years when Johan Gullichsen last won the trophy for the club was perfect timing. The club now has its 150 years anniversary year so we are all very proud to have our boy back home. The racing against Christian and his crew was really tight and exciting.
After the Gold Cup we started the Worlds with really good feeling because everything just seemed to be right. Our speed and maneuvers were very good in all conditions and the most important our conservative tactics on the race course was excellent. Winning the Worlds before the last day was a fantastic feeling. Never before in history a Finnish boat has won the 5.5 mR Worlds! Thank you Thomas and Robert you are the best!
What made our 2 year 5.5 mR project possible starting with Alpen Cup and the Worlds last year in Garda was Majlen and Jan Fazer. They bought the boat and named it Kan-Bej 2 in honor of their father Peter Fazer who was a legend in the 5.5 mR class. Without their comittement this all would have been impossible!
Having sailed a lot of different sailing boats in my life the 5.5 mR is probably the best of them all. All the sailors in the class are fantastic people! The speed is more or less the same in all the modern boats. What makes the different is trimming the boats constantly to keep the speed up. The boat is also very tactical and sensitive how you steer and maneuver it. This is how it should be!
The age don’t seem to be a matter, look at Jussi (Papa Noel) and the Swedish boat Keller brothers and Gustafsson! They are all over 70 and sailing like hell! This is incredible and give us all hope that we have many years in this wonderful sport ahead of us!

Andreas:
Sailing a 5,5 IC is always exciting, especially when you feel that boat and crew are in a good shape and working very effectively together.
So did our 1982 built Evolution CRIOLLO. With light or heavier winds – CRIOLLO was always first at the finishing line and had often a few moderns behind her. With gorgeous wheather and rain at home we really enjoyed the sailing in Helsinki waters a lot.
The sailing was mostly very fair. The thanks are not only to the Race Officer and his crew, working smoothly and effectively, but also to Matti for his big effort in preparing the 2011 Worlds.
Feel invited to come to Germany next year for the 2012 Worlds in Boltenhagen, where the Norddeutsche Regatta Verein, Germanies largest Sailing Club will host the Regatta.
