World championship: Jochen Schümann makes less errors...
(Sunday 9th of Jan. 2005)Patrick Huguenin (Tosh) aboard Blade Runner SUI-214 says: "Schuemann is taking a good option to winning the title. In race 5 we were leading going downwind when we ran across a fishing net and then we broached, Schümann on Artémis and Marazzi on Ali Baba took advantage of the situation finnishing 1st and 2nd.
On the next race (6) the same trio was in the lead again, this time we avoided the net ! From a speed point of view we are on equal term with the german but he makes less error and when he does he is quick to recover and he will not do it again..."
With 5 wins and two second there hardly any doubts he will become the new 5.5 World champion. Gullichsen should not be worried for the 2nd place but the fight is still on for third place between Ali-Baba and Maitresse.
Carabella from Italy is in the lead of the Classics and should keep the first place like Goddam from Rob Fielding in the Evolution Class.

Italy and Switzerland win Classic Cup and Scandinavian Gold Cup
Sydney, Tuesday 4th of January; Italy represented by Carabella ITA-73 (a former Australian world champion) won the Classic Cup beating Pam sailing for Australia.
In the Scandinavian Gold Cup, Switzerland represented by Ali-Baba SUI-206 wins the trophy for the fourth time. Bruno Marazzi beat the Finnish boat in the fourth and final match.

Scandinavian Gold Cup (by Patrick 'Tosh' Huguenin from Blade Runner)
"It's been now three days since we are in Sydney and getting used to the sun and the heat, the weather is bright and temperature is somewhere near 30 degrees celsius.
Tempting isn't it ? Yes, but we had to fly 20 hours to earn this...
Our boat arrived well and did not suffer from the heat in his container.
To get started we are participating in the Gold Cup. It is a regatta where each nation is represented by one boat.
As we missed our selection for Switzerland, we are currently competing for France and we are the only french speaking boat here anyway.
The rules of the Gold Cup are simple, the first nation to win 3 races wins the Gold Cup. The first three races are sailed in fleet, if you don't win a race you are dismissed.
Countries represented are: Switzerland, Finland, Netherlands, Australia, Norway, Germany, Italy and France.
The first race sees the victory of the Finnish in front of the Neds and us. Ok it is not what we expected but it was a difficult match due to poor conditions. Little wind, lots of choppy waters due to havy traffic accross the bay. It's sunday 2nd of January and all the Aussies are out there....
Today monday the outlook is better for this second heat, the thermic is present, 10 knts, with a bright sunshine, plenty of protection cream, sunglasses and hat...
We are fighting hard against Switzerland to keep the lead but we miss the gun by a half-hull. It's better but we have the feeling there is plenty of space for improvement..., we still need a first to stay in the race.
The third race start in similar conditions. We have a good start windward of the fleet, we are playing the shifts and the current.
Ok let's make it short: we end up fourth...all in 'pocket handkerchief', Switzerland wins for the second time.
The final will oppose the Swiss and the Finnish ! "

Today, 27C, sunny, the first race day for the Australian Selection series and an opportunity
for the visitors to get familiar with the race course, it started off badly with no wind. A north easterly breeze filled in enough by around 1pm to have a start in around 8kn
of breeze. 2 laps of a 3nm course, downwind finish.
The fleet split into 2 groups up the first leg,
the more northerly group crossed over 100 meters higher on the course,
from there the second group did not recover, Addam3, Ali-baba,
My Shout, Silverfox, Rana and Pam finished together and 5 minutes ahead of Carabella, Baragoola, Barranjoey, KingsCross, Rhapsody and Paladim.
The second race was in similar conditions, maybe a couple of knots more wind and slightly more north in the wind - around 10kn maybe gusting up to 12. The fleet stayed together this time and the racing was tight. Addam3 v Silverfox for 1st/2nd and Ali-baba/My Shout/Rana for 3rd/4th/5th.
(picture left: My Shout AUS-82, Bénodet 2003)
The third race was shortened due to the late start to be a 1 lap dash. By this stage the breeze
had become stronger, but more changable and several boats had to do multiple tacks to regain the top layline. On the run down to the finish the breeze dropped away to nothing, a weak south easter drew some (Silverfox, Pam) to the southern side of the course but it was the boats that kept north (Rana was seen ghosting along the rocks under Bradleys Head) who met with a 15kn north westerly change first.
The north westerly built to 17kn and gusty for an hour or two and then the southerly
20kn change came through just after everyone made it back to the Squadron.
