Gold Cup - Classic Cup - German Open - World championship
Flensburg - June 2001
Gold Cup - five races to defend the cup
It took the Bahamas 4 fleet races and a match race against Finland to keep the famous Gold Cup. Things had started well for Gavin McKinney's crew when they took the gun of the first and second race. But the Finnish Jussi Gullischen came back in business when he won race 3 and 4 which gave them the opportunity to go in final against the Bahamian. The match-race took place on the morning of Sunday 10th of June just before the start of the World championship in the afternoon. Both boat took an equal start. With a leeward position and taking benefits from slight wind changes, the Finnish boat was able to take the lead in the first beat. He even manage to gain a 48 second lead before going on the downwind reach. Taking each wind shifts and with better tactics, Gavin managed to recover for lost ground. He was able to reduce the difference by only 15 seconds and finally the Bahamian boat John B once again was able to catch up with the Finnish and overtake him in the last beat by playing all the wind shifts.
The Bahamas wins the Scandinavian Gold Cup for the sixth time. Previous wins were in 1974, 1977, 1982, 1983 and 2000.

The Neds keep the Classic Cup
The Classic Cup was less disputed as the Dutch boat Tripel NED-13 won 2 of the 3 races sailed for this challenge. Germany represented by Web GER-27 was second and Chaje 3 racing for Finland was third. (See results below)

Jochen Schümann sets high standards
Only three races were sailed for the German Open as to stronger winds blew over the Förde of Flensburg on the first day of the championship. It turned out to be a match-race between Jochen Schümann and Jürg Menzi. At this game the German helmsman and Olympic medallist proved to be unbeatable and the former world champion could only watch him go for the finishing line. Jochen Schümann sailing Artémis XI made a no fault by winning all three races.

One class above
There was an impressive fleet of thirty-eight 5.5 starting in this world championship taking place in the Förde of Flensburg north of Germany. The fjord was just large enough to set-up the course. On Sunday the race started early afternoon just after the Gold Cup final but had to be cancelled as the wind made a radical 180 degree turn and then died away…

Monday was a perfect day for racing. Two races were sailed, the first being won by Marie-Françoise XV and (Artémis XI - SUI 205 designed by Sébastien Schmidt and built by Chritstof Wilke)
the second by Artémis XI. Would the scenario of the German open not be repeated ? The next day was more demanding for the crews and boats as the wind blew between 17 and 27 knots. Main victim of the day was Weekend V who nearly lost her mast as the crew experienced problems with the foot of the mast. Jochen Schümann had an decisive win over Jürg Menzi who came third behind Gavin Mc Kinney.
The race committee decided not to go for a second race that day as they feared the wind could increase and cause more casualties in the fleet. Two races were sailed on Wednesday and both were won again by Artémis XI. Thursday the wind wouldn't set properly on the Flensbuger förde and the race committee had to cancel all the races that day. Jochen Schümann was the logical winner of this world championship he had an experienced crew and one of the fastest boat in the fleet. Daniel Stampfli of Marie-François XV had to admit : " He is one class above ! "
In the Evolution class, Andreas Christiansen sailing Weekend V GER-30 with one OCS and one DNF just made it in front of Knock Out from Hans-Jürgen Queisser. Chaje 2 GER-28 with Dirk Manno at the helm was by far the best Classic yacht overall. He was able to beat the best Evolution and also managed to put six boat between him and second classic boat which was Chaje 3 from Matti Muoniovaara.
The Flensburger Yacht Club organisation was very good and very efficient. The facilities provided by the club were excellent and their welcome has to be remembered for future venues ! (see complete results and graphical rankig display)
